Products Intended to Kill Fleas and Ticks Can Also Poison Pets and The People Who Handle Them
Each year, millions of people purchase flea and tick products believing that these products have been thoroughly tested and are safe for both pets and their caregivers. The main active ingredient often is a pesticide known as Permethrin (it is used in more than 18 products, including Spot-On Pesticides such as Frontline, Zodiac, Defend, Bio Spot, Adams and Advantage Bayer K9 Advantix, Defend EXspot, and Hartz Control OneSpot). It kills insects by paralyzing their nervous system (that is also how nerve gas works). However, it cannot distinguish between an insect’s nervous system, a dog’s nervous system, or a human’s nervous system. Children especially are at risk of acute poisoning and long-term health effects. Other active ingredients in these solutions include chemicals such as imidacloprid, fipronil, permethrin, methoprene, and pyriproxyfen, all of which have caused serious health problems in animals in laboratories.
